The sun beat down harshly on the Barren Lands as it kept it's peak spot in the middle of the sky overhead. There was no foliage to hide behind, no trees to provide shade or shrubs to hide under. The Barren Lands lived up to it's name. There wasn't even a cloud in the sky, unfortunately for the two brothers trying to make it through this forsaken place. They had been lost here for a long time - far longer than either Romulus or Remus would have liked.
Romulus found this place to be unbearably boring. There was no way to play hide and seek or any creeks or streams to play in. There were no squirrels to harrass or mice to chase... He hated it here. "What's wrong with this place?! How come there's... nothing?! There's absolutely nothing here! Just a bunch of dirt!" he yelled, kicking up some dirt with his paw. His brother, Remus, let out a small, annoyed growl, "Watch it...!" as some of the kicked up dust almost made it into his eyes. He loved Romulus, but he was cranky.
They hadn't found anything to drink in a while and the only thing they'd eaten was a snake, which hadn't been easy to catch. They'd only done it because they were desperate for food, not remembering to eat something before heading out to explore this new place. Both had been lucky they hadn't been bitten - they hadn't learned of the different types of snakes, but they had actually chosen to attack a venomous one. Neither of them realized even now how close they'd been to possibly losing each other, and who knew how the survivor might've gone on.
Romulus and Remus' family was a broken one. Their father had abandoned them and their mother, although as far as either of the two were concerned, he had died defending them from wild dogs. Their mother had attempted to care for them as well, but had abandoned them not long ago either and the pair had had to survive on their own ever since. Although the brothers had their differences, they both loved each other unconditionally and shared a goal. The reason they had started wandering through the lands of Kongrai was to try and find their missing mother. It hadn't occured to the pair that maybe she had left them to fend for themselves. All they knew was that they wanted to be a wholesome family again.
But traveling through these lands, the pups had hit a rough spot. Neither of them knew exactly which way to go and neither were accustomed to trying to live in a place without shelter or a plentiful source of food and water.
As the two made their way down the side of a hill, Romulus stopped. Though he wanted to push on, he was sick and tired of it. They were lost and they both knew it! He hated it here! Absolutely hated it! He knew that just stopping wouldn't get him or Remus out of here any sooner, but... well, didn't they deserve a break anyway? Remus, who had gone ahead just a few paces, stopped when he heard the sound of his brother plopping to the ground and rolling to his side. "..." Neither of the pups spoke. For a minute, both just stayed where they were, Remus frowning at Romulus, Romulus staring off into the distance. Remus felt like he should be angry at his brother, but he wasn't. He was just as tired of this place as he was. But Romulus just looked flat out angry....
The second Romulus dared to shut his eyes, Remus leapt on him, playfully nipping his ear as the two rolled down the hill. Both of them seemed to immediately forget their woes as their play fighting began. Dust began to stir up, but neither of them cared any longer. It just made the game seem more exciting! But what the pair didn't seem to realize is how dangerous they'd just made their situation. The plum of dust began to rise as the brothers continued playing, welcoming wanderers all tgrough the vacinity, good and bad, to explore.
((Sorry if it's kindof bad, but I just really wanted to get these boys started))
